Penfolds, Magill Estate

The river of red, a reoccurring motif, is used within the lighting design. The red neon light journeys from the exterior of the building in through the restaurant and lounge. A homage to the red wines that Penfolds is ever so famous for.

The Penfolds Magill Estate fine dining restaurant resides within the rolling hills of the famous Penfolds vineyard, SA.

The Lighting design had to work within parameters governed by the 1980’s design of the building. Austere perforated metal ceilings were impenetrable, and we were given little choice but to formulate a suspended lighting system. This in fact was a blessing, as the result is a wondrous sea of undulating hand blown bulbs of glass, some twinkling with light. Their colours and hues, from clear, frosted to graphite and blushed gold, are reminiscent of the juicy sweet morsels paramount to the Penfolds successful empire.

This delicate and intricate system provides the main lighting of the dining area, hanging in clusters scattered whimsically over the dining room. Delicate columns of glittering sheer drapery are gently washed in light.

The lounge area with its bespoke furniture is a sea of red. Red velvet bespoke couches coupled with custom red shaded floor lights scatter the area. And the expressly designed carpet of abstract patterns, generated from the lines of the Penfolds land, denotes rivers of red flowing through.  Adjacent is a full height glass cabinet illuminated to draw attention from the clientele to showcase the fruits of Penfolds work, the reason for the restaurant; bottles of fine red wine.
