Yellow, Sydney

On bustling MacLeay street, in Sydney’s effervescent and stylish Potts point, sits a little culinary oasis; Yellow. The lighting design in the bar area was created to bring attention to that area, creating its own identity. Wall lights are positioned on the chimney fascia of former fireplace, and a soft curtain wrapping around the bar top overhead glows in a subtle wash of warm white light.

On bustling MacLeay street, in Sydney’s effervescent and stylish Potts point, sits a little culinary oasis; Yellow.

Seemingly carved into a former bakery, PGMD has created a cosy bistro with patinaed walls of original exposed brick, plaster and paint, which they dotted sparingly with decorative elements of rounds and semi-circles in timbers, mirrors and felts. Creamy leather banquettes, bistro chairs and tables define the dining area. Olive, beige, greys and silvers create the muted dreamy colour palette.

Low hung small domed pendant lights in various colours compliment and add splashes of colour to the warm subdued hues. Light is cast over the tables, darkening overhead; reminiscent of old Parisian bistros and Italian tavernas. The pendants are both a decorative element and a functional lighting tool, and are paramount elements to the over-all interior design. Additional luminaires are positioned to accent elements and gently wash light down walls.

The aim of the lighting design was to enhance the feel of an intimate dining venue which has the impression of a worn dining institution. A restaurant sheltered from the outside world, loved and experienced by many over countless eras, surpassing fads and fashions.

This the 5th establishment I have had the honour of working on, with PGMD, for Nick Hildebrandt and Brent Savage.
